What is a TREC file

TREC files contain screen recordings taken with Camtasia, a screen recording program for both Microsoft Windows and Apple Mac computers. It stores the video data as well as any audio played during the time of recording. It also has the ability to contain transitions, cursor effects, and other metadata. Usually, TREC files are used to save demos, computer training videos, or any screen recording used in YouTube videos and the like. TREC replaced the CAMREC (Windows) and CMREC (Mac) file extensions since Camtasia versions 8.4 for Windows and 2.8 for Mac were released.

TREC files are saved as part of the editing project files for Camtasia, which are using the CAMPROJ (Windows) and CMPROJ (Mac) file extension. Since TREC is used on Windows and Mac alike, it makes the sharing of these video files a lot easier compared to the previous system of different file extensions being used for the two operating systems.
