PIF, Program Information File (.pif)
The PIF Executables file format
PIF files are known as Program Information Files on Microsoft Windows computers. The PIF file contains information that the Windows operating system needs to run programs or software linked to the PIF. Formerly, PIF files were used by MS-DOS. They can be seen as links or shortcuts for different executable files. These files are typically created when creating a shortcut for a program or when said program has been modified.
Technical details of PIF files
The information contained in a PIF file is linked to a certain program. This includes the direct path to the executable file (most typically an EXE file), information about the size of the application or program's window and how much memory is used by the program. PIF files are prone to virus infections, thus it's advise to scan an unknown PIF file thoroughly before opening it.
