MDF - Media Disc Image File

What is a MDF file

Files with the MDF file extension belong to the category of disk image files. Programs like Alcohol 120% and CyberLink PowerDVD can save data from media disks like DVDs and CDs as a disc image. This information can be stored in the MDF format. MDF files, as well as other disk image files, are used to create backup copies of DVDs or CDs.

MDF files can be compared to ISO files, however the data inside the file is saved in a different format. The MDF file is lacking any kind of information concerning the header or track of the disk image. Those information are stored separately in a MDS file. In the MDf file, only the actual disc data is saved. Together, the MDS and MDF file form a whole.

Here's a small, but not exhaustive list of programs that can open MDF documents:

  • CyberLink PowerDVD 15
  • DT Soft DAEMON Tools
  • H+H Software Virtual CD
  • MagicISO
  • PowerISO
  • Smart Projects IsoBuster
