What is a MAX file

MAX files are typically created by the 3D modelling application 3ds Max. The program is also able to animate and render three-dimensional scenes. These scenes are then saved in the MAX file format. MAX files and the according software are used for professional programming of 3D scenes for different media like television, games and movies.

Contained in the MAX files are different three-dimensional models used for a fully 3D (animated) scene. Crucial information for the models, such as lightning effects, shading, textures, the underlying wireframes and animation are stored in the MAX file. The 3DS file format, a predecessor of the MAX file, can still be exported in newer versions of the 3ds Max application. While MAX files are classified as CAD or CAM files, they differ from generic 3D image formats. The MAX file shows the state of the art of a scene, portraying the interaction of different plugins of 3ds Max. Thus, these files can only be opened in the according application.
