XESC - Expression Encoder Screen Capture File

What is a XESC file

Files with the XESC extension are created using a particular screen recording program by Microsoft, namely the Microsoft Expression Encoder. It's a video file that contains a screen capture recorded using this program. The video contains an exact recording of the screen at the time of recording. It can also contain audio data recorded using a microphone.

XESC files are only created by recording using the encoder that comes with Microsoft's Expression Studio. Since it's a Microsoft native format, Windows Media Player is able to play back XESC files with the correct codec as well. Thus, in addition to Windows Media Player, the Expression Encoder has to be installed in order to play XESC files. Alternatively, the Expression Encoder Screen Capture Codec can be installed as well to do the job. The codec is available for download on the Microsoft website.

Here's a small, but not exhaustive list of programs that can open XESC documents:

  • File Viewer Plus (Windows)
  • Microsoft Expression Encoder (Windows)
  • Microsoft Expression Studio (Windows)
  • VideoLAN VLC media player (Windows)
