TBZ - Bzip Compressed Tar Archive

What is a TBZ file

TBZ files are closely related to TAR files. Basically, they are TAR archives that use a specific kind of additional compression, namely BZIP compression. TBZ files contain files, usually several or grouped in folders, that were compressed using the program Unix Tar. Afterward, it is compressed using Bzip.

By 2020, the TBZ format has been almost completely replaced since the Bzip compression has also been succeeded by Bzip2 compression. This also introduced new file formats such as BZ2 and TBZ2. Sometimes, TBZ is also used as an extension for these files, but TBZ2 is more common nowadays.

Here's a small, but not exhaustive list of programs that can open TBZ documents:

  • 7-zip (Linux)
  • Apple Archive Utility (Mac)
  • Smith Micro StuffIt Deluxe (Windows & Mac)
  • Corel WinZip (Windows)
  • Incredible Bee Archiver (Mac)
  • tar (Linux)
