DBX - Outlook Express E-mail Folder

What is a DBX file

Outlook Express, the e-mailing program native to Microsoft operating systems, uses DBX files for their folders. The DBX file contains the e-mail messages saved in a specific folder or mailbox on Outlook Express. It serves the purpose of save e-mails and make a backup of received messages.

DBX files can typically be found in the user directory under "Documents and Settings". The files are accordingly named after the mailboxes they were created from. DBX files can be copied to other folders or imported to other Microsoft e-mailing programs like Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail. Thus, this file is very versatile and can be used by different e-mailing programs without any loss of information. To do so, go to "File > Import > Messages" and choose to import from Outlook Express 6 (or OE6). However, it's not advised to open and manipulate the files manually as they can become corrupted easily.

Here's a small, but not exhaustive list of programs that can open DBX documents:

  • Microsoft Outlook Express
  • Microsoft Windows Mail
  • Microsoft Windows Live Mail
  • Remo Recover Outlook Express
  • OE-Mail Recovery
  • DBXtract
  • Stellar DBX to PST Converter
