QT - Apple QuickTime Movie

What is a QT file

The QT file extension is used for files related to the program QuickTime, specifically the QuickTime player. QT files are movie files. The QuickTime player also gives you the ability to create, edit and even publish many different types of multimedia files. These files can contain a wide variety of media, including videos, graphics, animations and even movies. Typically, these files are compressed because of their size. Compression makes it much easier to transfer and distribute the files and the reduced size also makes it easier for the videos to be streamed online.

The design of the QuickTime file format is that of a container that holds multiple types of multimedia tracks. The separate tracks can include video, audio, subtitle text or other types of effects. Each file can include either its own, specific digitally-encoded media stream, or it can contain the information required to access the data from a separate file. The flexibility to separate the various tracks makes QuickTime particularly popular to use as an editor. While QT is a file extension used by QuickTime, the more popular one is the MOV file extension. QuickTime movies can be found saved as such more common than in the QT format.

Here's a small, but not exhaustive list of programs that can open QT documents:

  • Roxio Toast 12 (Mac)
