MDB - Microsoft Access Database

What is a MDB file

MDB files are files created by the Microsoft native database program Access. The program is part of most Microsoft Office suits, however there is no Microsoft Access installation available for other operating systems. However, other software can open and handle MDB files as well.

The information contained in the MDB file includes several different fields: Tables and fields that make up the database's structure, table rows that contain the entries to the database, as well as more complex entities like queries, reports, security settings and more. Since MDB files can easily become infected, it's advised to conduct a thorough scan of the file when received from an unknown or unsafe source.

Here's a small, but not exhaustive list of programs that can open MDB documents:

  • Freewind MDB Converter (Windows)
  • Kexi (Linux)
  • mdb-expot (Linux)
  • MDBopener (Web)
  • MDB Viewer (Mac)
  • MDB Viewer Plus (Windows)
  • Microsoft Access 2016 (Windows)
  • Microsoft Visual Studio 2013 (Windows)
  • SAS Institute SAS (Windows & Linux)
  • Wolfram Research Mathematica (Windows & Mac)
